Yes is easily one of my favourite progressive rock bands, if not one of my favourite band from any genre. Their otherwordly music is so inspirational to me that it’s hard for me to explain it. I think their masterpiece Close To The Edge says it all. Here is a personal Top 10 of my favourite Yes songs, I’m not saying that it’s their best best songs but really my favourite ones.
1. Close To The Edge (Close To The Edge)
The epic song by excellence. The progressive song by excellence. Do you see the floating islands in the sky painted by Roger Dean? This is where this song brings me.
2. And You And I (Close To The Edge)
A Pure Yes song with its beautiful acoustic start, progressively leading to one of their most majestic break. Mellotron heaven!
3. The Gates Of Delirium (Relayer)
Probably their most ambitious song. The battle part is just epic awesomeness and the “release part” is heavenly beautiful. “Soon oh soon the light ass within and soothe this endless night…”
4. Heart Of The Sunrise (Fragile)
An emotional roller coaster. Jon Anderson at his best! “I feel lost in the cityyyy”.
5. Awaken (Going Ofr The One)
Another epic song from another dimension. Yes still at its best in 1977!
6. South Side of the Sky (Fragile)
A underestimated song in my opinion. Starting like a rock song, it gets more progressive with this beautiful and moving piano break.
7. Be The One (Keys To Ascension)
A great surprise from the Key To Ascension live albums. “Be The One” was a new song written in 1995. Many people don’t like the four studio songs of Key To Ascension I and II but I think they are the last very good songs from the band actually. And “Be The One” is my favourite because of how it evolves from the beginning to the end.
8. Starship Trooper (YesSongs)
Another classic tune. Why the YesSongs version? Because of the alternative ending with its great solo and Mellotron layers.
9. Roundabout (Fragile)
The first song I heard from Yes. It was the Keys To Ascension version. I immediately loved it and couldn’t stop to play it for days. Less ambitious than the other songs here, it’s still a brillant song and means a lot to me.
10. Ritual (Nous sommes du soleil) (Tales From Topographic Oceans)
22 minutes of progressive celebration featuring some crazy bass line by Chris Squire.
